There have been people worshiping in Thorney for over 1000 years, with the current building having been the centre of Christian life in the village since 1638.
Thorney Abbey today still has a regular congregation and choir, but it is also the venue for community events, such as the Flower Festival, Christmas Tree Festival and concerts.
Keeping the Abbey open costs nearly £44,000 a year, that’s about £120 a day! And that’s before the money required for repairs, restoration and improvements. The Abbey is a listed building, so as you can imagine, these can be very high sums indeed! All this money has to be found through fund raising events and gratefully received donations. The Church of England receives NO money from the government.
However, it is getting increasing difficult to cover the day to day costs, let alone funding any new improvements. .For this reason, we are asking if you would be prepared to ‘Adopt a Day’ and help us keep the Abbey open for future generations.
To ‘Adopt a Day, all you have to do is donate £10 a month for one year by standing order. In return, you get to chose a day which will be YOUR DAY! It could be an anniversary or birthday or in memory of someone special. You will receive a certificate with your name and chosen date on it and this will also be recorded in a special book to be kept in the Abbey. Also, with your permission, we would like to say thank you to our adopters by publishing a list of names in the monthly magazine and church noticeboards.
You can start the process of adopting a day by downloading and completing the form here.
